Budget Snacks: Homemade Potato Chips

I’ m trying to get a little more organized with this whole blogging thing, so Thursday is officially becoming my designated food day! From recipes I’ve tried and enjoyed to kitchen nightmares, Thursdays are for the kitchen! With that being said, today I’m easing into a series on budget snacks with an easy at home potato chip recipe!

As previously mentioned we’re currently balling on a budget, so I figured now would be a great time to get cracking on making some of our own snacks! Potato chips are always a fan favorite, and as we never seem to run low on potatos or olive oil, this seemed like a great way to start!

For this recipe you will need the following:

3 potatos sliced into thin slices (the thickness is up to your personal preference)

A small saucepan with half a cup of olive oil over medium heat

Salt and pepper (optional)

Now many recipes will call for a mandoline slicer and to make sure your potatos are sliced to a certain thickness, but I don’t even know what that is so I used a knife and eye balled the thickness to what looked reasonable. Please, if you know the exact measurement feel free to throw it in the comments, I’m the worst at details!

Anyway potato slicing aside, all you need to do is heat the olive oil in a small sauce pan and then drop in your slices! Be careful of the hot oil and let each side crisp up until golden brown, which is about ten minutes a side depending on thickness. I found that then throwing them in a bowl with salt and pepper and baking on 350°F for about three minutes made them absolutely perfect! You can skip the baking step if your potatos are equally sliced, but since I usually have a few chubby slices, the baking guarantees that the chips are extra crispy!

I serve these puppies up with either ketchup or a sweet barbeque sauce and they’re devoured in minutes! Another fun way to serve is by throwing shredded swiss and pastrami on top and baking on a sheetpan for 10 minutes on 400°F for the perfect Irish nachos!

No matter how you serve them, homemade potato chips are easy to make, inexpensive, and a healthier alternative to the store bought brands! So happy snacking and let me know if you try these out in the comments!

  1. My mom and I used to make this all the time, but it’s been awhile since I last made any (cue the toddler who screams it’s a little too brown). Actually, I currently have 2 potatoes and nothing to do with them. Guess I do now! Thanks!
