Shows to Watch During the Pandemic

Today is the first official day I do not have a job to go to since the government ordered all daycare centers shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic and so far the dishes are done, the laundry is going, both kiddos are fed and I’m enjoying a nice cup of coffee in my pajamas. Pandemics aren’t all bad, however the avoidance of anywhere but our house and the park has really made me dig deep into the Netflix world, so I’ve compiled a list of some shows to hold you over during quarantine. If you run through these shows, feel free to check out my other binge themed article here.

Netflix Shows

1. Queer Eye More Than a Makeover

This show melts my heart every single episode, and in more ways than one. The reality show consists of the fab five, a group of five amazing gay men that all work on a team to make over a deserving human from the ground up. Karamo, Antoni, Tan, Bobby, and my all time favorite Jonathan Van Ness are absolute angels when it comes to making peoples lives over and giving them a fresh start and I love it! If you’re looking for something to make you laugh, cry, and feel amazing, this show is for you.

2. Adam Ruins Everything

Hosted by Adam Conover, this show is all about unveiling the truth behind literally everything. With episodes breaking down things from the marketing behind toothpaste to the scam that is coffin buying, Adam is here to ruin everything. A high energy show that’s short and sweet at only a half hour, this is great for learning some stuff while laughing along the way.

3. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

This gem is all about Jerry Seinfield picking up other comedians in cool cars to get coffee, and if you’re looking for authentic comedy this show is for you. With guests ranging from Ricky Gervais to Trevor Noah, this is perfect for when you just need to laugh and don’t want to invest into something story based. The cars are vintage and beautiful and the conversations are honest and eye opening, definitely worth the watch!

4. Billy on the Street

Another quick comedy show to get you giggling, Billy on the Street is literally just that, Billy Eichner (the voice of Timon in the live action Lion King) spends some time running around the streets of New York asking people questions, playing trivia, and being hilarious. If you need a quick pick me up this show is a go to, especially when you need to unwind after a long day of quarantine.

5. Jeopardy

Classic game show with a classic host, just put it on and be amazed at how much these people actually know.

6. Chill with Bob Ross

For when the pandemic is making your anxiety fly through the roof, calm it down by watching Bob Ross paint some gorgeous winter scenes. Let the smooth, calming tone of his voice settle your nerves and escape to a wintry dreamland as he flawlessly creates a masterpiece. Don’t know who Bob Ross is? Check out my appreciation post here.

7. The IT Crowd

An oldie but goodie, this show is absolutely hilarious and will suck you right in to the crazy antics of the IT department. A comedy series that follows the very small IT crowd of a company that doesn’t really know what IT is, the characters are hysterical and the situations they find themselves in even funnier. Multiple seasons that call from multiple laughs, you’ll want to binge it more than once.

8. John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid

I adore everything John Mulaney does, his stand up is hilarious and on point, so definitely check his specials out on Netflix!

9. John Mulaney: New in Town

His first stand up on Netflix, New in Town covers many different struggles, from meeting weirdos on the street to going to the doctor, you won’t stop laughing.

10. John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous

From colleges trying to solicit donations to the pressure to have kids, Mulaney tackles adulthood in this hilarious stand up special. I’m a little biased, I love John Mulaney, so take the last three recommendations as you will.

1. Seinfield

A classic, if you haven’t watched any of this show, now is the perfect time!

2. Superstore

With five seasons, this show is an absolute hidden gem! The Office meets Walmart, with America Ferrera as the leading lady, the comedy is refreshing while still maintaining multiple story lines that keep you hooked. With Ferrera slated to leave the show at the end of season five, now is the time to binge!

3. Future Man

Josh Hutcherson from the Hunger Games will bring you to side splitting laughter as he is sent through time with two video game characters brought to life in order to save the world. The comedy in this show is written so well I honestly don’t remember ever seeing a show that mixed action and laughs so well. Big laughs, big guns, and bigger world problems, Future Man is a light hearted take on the world coming to an end.

Amazon Prime

1. Hunters

Set in crime ravaged 1970’s New York, join a group of Nazi hunters as they try to eradicate the streets of the hidden Nazi scum living among them. Violent, on edge, and full of jaw dropping moments, you are not going to want to stop watching.

2. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Another comedy, this one is all about female empowerment in the form of recently separated and living her best life Mrs. Maisel as she becomes a stand up sensation. I love the time period, the writing, and all the costumes, something about the quirky comedy just makes you root for Midge.

3. The Man in the High Castle

Based on the idea that America didn’t win World War Two, this show is absolutely riveting as Japan holds power over the pacific half of the United States and Germany holds power over the eastern states. Based loosely on the novel of the same name, the idea of new evidence emerging that could change the world as they know it leads the main characters on a journey that glues you to the screen.
