In Response to Current Events: A Letter.

It’s the second day of October, and I’m slowly waking up, I go on social media and my feed is flooded with news of a Las Vegas shooting that has now become the most deadly shooting in U.S. history. I scroll further and see posts about the people of Puerto Rico and their desperate need for help. The country suffering massive devastation after Hurricane Maria, a category five storm, ripped through the island leaving nothing but destruction. As of yesterday half of the country is still without drinking water and only five percent have electric power. I scroll further and see more argument regarding the NFL and the right to kneel during the anthem. The kneeling was a protest against police brutality but has turned into something greater, protected by the first amendment, the protest has managed to divide our country and get people talking, although often the conversations only chip the surface of the issue. I muster up the courage to scroll just once more and see an article dated two days prior about the open lines of communication the United States has with North Korea, yet the hateful rhetoric continues from both countries leaders which could lead to nuclear disaster in the absolute worst case scenario. I’m done scrolling.

I try to keep this blog as upbeat as possible, and had planned for today’s article to be fun and Halloween related, however given the state of things I felt it important to bring a more somber tone to today’s post. We are living in a time where collective chaos seems to become more and more normal, but we still have the power to control ourselves, our words, our actions. Regardless of the perceived darkness we may face, a simple quote comes to mind.

Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

Albus Dumbledore

So stay safe, stay informed, and live your best life.
